Built in 1284 by Albrecht von Löwenstein and Luccardis von Bolanden, the structure originally served as the outer bailey to Sterrenberg Castle.
In 1295, ownership passed to the knights Siegfried Schenk von Sterrenberg and Ludwig von Sterrenberg, who thereafter adopted the name “von Liebenstein.” The famous legend of the hostile brothers associated with Castles Sterrenberg and Liebenstein emerged around 1587.
1587 Entstehung der Sage von den feindlichen Brüdern auf den Burgen Sterrenberg und Liebenstein.
By 1637, the estate had been transferred to the von Waldenburg family, and in 1783 it was donated by the princely House of Nassau to Georg Ernst Ludwig Baron von Preuschen von und zu Liebenstein.
1783 Schenkung des fürstlichen Gesamthauses Nassau an Georg Ernst Ludwig Freiherr von Preuschen von und zu Liebenstein.
The site later appeared in 1886 in Heinrich Heine’s poem “Two Brothers.”
From 1967 to 1995, Rudolf Baron von Preuschen von und zu Liebenstein expanded the property into a hotel.
Finally, in 2002, it became part of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley.
